Got Funk?

It occurred to me that we all have funk. Some good, some bad, some ugly and some indescribable. I am not really sure if funk is a good thing or a bad thing, but clearly know that we don’t address funk enough and we should.

What is Funk?

Funk is a many splendor thing. Funk is a nasty vibe, and a sweet sexy feeling; Funk is funkiness, a natural release of the essence within. Funk is a high, but it is also down at the bottom, the low-down earthy essence, and the bass elements. Funk is at the extremes of everything. Funk is hot, but funk can be cool. Funk is primitive, yet funk can be sophisticated. Funk is way out, and a way in. Funk is all over the place. Funk is a means of release that cannot be denied. Village Voice writer Barry Walters explained The Funk as well as anyone could: "Trying to put that thang called funk into words is like trying to write down your orgasm. Both thrive in that gap in time when words fall away, leaving nothing but sensation."

Someone "funky looking" is generally thought of as someone colorful and amusing, yet unkempt, undisciplined, somewhere between exotic and ridiculous. Whether or not "funky" is in style, there are funky-looking people everywhere. Quite often, these funky people are self-styled, creative, and in touch with themselves. Funkiness, then, is an earthly sense of self that is free of inhibitions and capable of tapping instincts and celebrating the human condition in all its forms. Funkiness is a way of life

Funkiness for our purposes is an aesthetic of deliberate confusion, of uninhibited, soulful behavior that remains viable because of a faith in instinct, a joy of self, and a joy of life.

Funk cannot be easily nailed down and comes at the best and worst of times. My riders right now are all going thru some funk, and it will be the one who can sort it all through that will be successful and rise to the top.

It’s ok to have some funk, but when funk disrupts your life and you go backwards you need to really address it. As you sit on ponder where and what capacity funk enters your life and how much funk you want to take on, make yourself involved. No one needs funk when they are on the race track. Blow the funk away and store it for later. It will be there when you drive umpteen hours home in the truck. Don’t worry about the funk now that concerns next year.. Plenty of funk to deal with during silly season (for you racers). If you are addressing funk in your personal life that is hurting your professional career then yes.. We have a problem. On the days you aren’t in your career, make a list and sort your funk. Your piles should consist of “ No worry Funk” That type would be the little things in life that can be everyday occurrences.. And things that just have no meaning or value at all. Then you have the “Now Funk”. Funk you need to address, get the answers and work it out so then you can file it in the no worry piles. Then you should have the real funk. Funk that makes you stop and freak out. It’s hard to sit with anyone and discuss your funk, because it’s so complex. So relax and take time to pinpoint each funk topic and try to work through one funk a day. If one type of funk rolls to another type of funk.. Stop and chase the first funk first.

Know this.. You are not alone. People from all walks of life go thru funk. Presidents of companies, Government leaders, Celebrities, your parents etc… It’s basically how you deal with funk that will make everything more clear. So my advice would be accept your funk, embrace your funk then make a conscious effort to sort your funk. Keeping in mind to save some funk, because we all need a little funk in our lives.

How’s my funk? My no worry funk pile is now overflowing…. LOL but have enough funk left for the rest of the race season! Boy I wish I was at the track! I miss you guys.. Good luck at Michigan, Springfield, NY, AZ and Vegas baby!!! May your funk be with you as you chase the checkered flag so we can all see your funky dance!!

Til next time;

Peace

Jennifer
